Wedding Photography Sussex / Walled Garden at Cowdray

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Jill and John’s very pretty wedding was at the beautiful Walled Garden at Cowdray. This historic garden is set in the estate of Cowdray Park next to the castle ruins at the entrance to Midhurst. Jill’s look on the day was modern and chic which sharply contrasted with the ancient surroundings. I loved the juxtaposition as she got ready at the antique stuffed Spread Eagle Hotel, though the floor is so uneven we were feeling a bit disconcerted. The room smelled fabulous, thanks to the bouquets from The Real Flower Company that were stuffed full of fragrant herbs and scented garden roses. After the very lovely ceremony, we took the Bride and Groom to the castle for portraits in the ruins. It was very sunny but the light amongst the old walls and stone windows was stunning. I got Jill to climb onto a wall, which she wisely did barefoot to take these beautiful shots, making the most of the location. The food by local firm Jacaranda looked delicious and as we left the guests were tucking in under the giant white round balloons that decorated the dining room. I love this wedding as it was extremely modern in an ancient location.

Brighton photographer / The Photo Book

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

As well as the high end but very beautiful, Queensberry albums that we offer, this year for both wedding and portrait photography, we have introduced the Photo Book. This is a 12 x 12 inch hardback book produced with archival lustre finish photographic paper pages that give brilliant colours and super sharp quality. It has a full wrap-around laminate cover which can be printed with an image of your choice on a range of colours. The book also offers complete lay-flat binding, showing off double-pages to best results. They can hold up to 200 images which is great for a wedding and we do a smaller version that has been popular for family portraits. It has taken us quite a long time to source a product that was affordable but still looks exceptional. The prices range from £250-£500.

Vintage Wedding / Charlotte & Tristan’s Wedding at Combe Bank School

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

On Saturday, Amy and I photographed a gorgeous Vintage inspired wedding at the elegant Combe Bank School near Seven Oaks in Kent. We started coverage by photographing Charlotte’s stunning vintage inspired gown by Joanne Fleming. It had a fabulous 1930s Hollywood Starlet look, finished with very pretty antique lace. Charlotte and Tristan have more than a slight thing for Minis and have been restoring an old one with the aim to using it for the wedding. Sadly, it wasn’t ready on time but a quick plea on the internet and a very kind lady volunteered to drive Charlotte and her Dad in hers.

After a quick but surprisingly emotional civil ceremony with just a few friends and close family, we had time to play around on the Grand staircase with Charlotte for some emotive movement shots. They then had a beautiful marriage blessing in the chapel with all of their guests. We discovered that these two have been sweethearts since they were 14 and have been through quite a lot together (cue the tears from Amy!) I was hoping for a sunset and right as the speeches finished, the sun was indeed creating magic. The very lovely Charlotte and Tristan were kind enough to skip their starters for some quick shots in an amazing light. I am hoping that one of these shots will make it onto their fireplace as a daily reminder of a very special and romantic day. I really do love this job!

Vintage Wedding Sussex/ new photography service launching soon

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

vintageteacupvintage-birdcageHere is a preview of some images from our Vintage Wedding Photography portfolio which will be going onto the redesigned site soon. Clients will be able to have this option on their images for either a Queensberry album or The PhotoBook. We love the vintage influence in wedding styling and wedding dresses and wanted to reflect this trend in our wedding photography. So the colour images have a slightly faded over-saturated look with creamy skin tones, whereas the black and white photos have a slightly retro warm tone. So if you are planning to have vintage tea sets, vintage candelabras, a revamped vintage dress or jewellery, retro bunting or an English garden party style wedding, then you will love this style of photography.

To help you plan here are some invaluable contacts from our little black book.vintage-teapot

To hire vintage bird cages and candelabras, plus gorgeous old fashioned rose covered jugs speak to Dex at Pollen Hire.

For show stopping flowers with a vintage feel contact Donal at Pollen flowers. Even if you are on a tight budget and are planning some DIY floral pieces, they have various useful things for hire.

To hire or commission fabulous bunting for a lovely country wedding, we recommend Beautiful Bunting in Sussex.

For vintage inspired couture bridal gowns, we love Joanne Fleming in Brighton. Her unique dresses remind me of 1930′s Hollywood glamour with a contemporary edge.

Finally, if you love the look but don’t know where to start, wedding stylist Jennifer Oliver has a great sense of design and access to all sorts of lovely vintage wedding items.

Sussex Wedding / Sian & Nigel’s Wedding at Buxted Park

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Buxted WeddingWe found Sian getting ready for her wedding in the gorgeous Robert and Elizabeth Browning suite at Buxted Park. It has very dark oriental furnishing with a beautiful four poster bed and provided a dramatic background for photos. As it was just Sian and her Mum, everything was very calm so we actually had some time to play around with photographing the flowers, shoes and dress. Sian wasn’t too keen on how the hairdresser had done her hair so she completely redid it herself and did look beautiful and classic, almost 1940s glamour. As the sun was now setting, Amy went to the Orangery to do the still-lives and did a great job, including lots of pictures of the yummy looking little cakes that we later found out were from Waitrose.weddingcakes

After their ceremony in the Library, Nigel and Sian joined their guests for a drinks reception in the Orangery while Amy and I did a quick rethink about where we were going to do their portraits. It was dark outside and there was another wedding in the Ballroom and Coat of Arms room so we set our lights up at the top of the Grand Staircase and made use of the columns and chandeliers up there.

Wedding Photography new products

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

We are very busy in the office and very excited about our ten year anniversary. The website is being updated soon by Richard at Brightonweb and we have had some help from Leif at Kendall Copywriting. I now have a rough idea how google works and what meta data is, though don’t test me on it!vintageshoes

Perhaps the most revolutionary change is our switch to digital photography for weddings. Much as I love working on film, our new Canon 5D mkIIs are everything we need in a camera and we have really seen their magic in our last few winter weddings. We can now be even more flexible on what we can offer clients and the products we can offer. Queensberry are still our main albums and the duo pages with photofronts have been most popular but we have always been looking for a more cost effective album that looks robust and stylish. There are a few coffee table book companies around but I have always found the printing or binding to be poor, especially when sat next to a Queensberry album. At last though, we have sourced a great 12 inch square photo book that sits flat, has a hard backed photo cover and the pages are made up of photographic paper. The first wedding sample should be here next week and it will also showcase our other big new service which is Vintage Wedding Photography. For this option, the images are printed with a slight warm tone on the black & white and a retro effect on the colour. The results are gorgeous and worth all the hard work we have been putting in over the winter. Well done Amy on getting this gorgeous shot of Maddie’s shoes in the snow, it is going to feature in the site redesign too :) www.devlinphotos.co.uk

Sussex Wedding / Maddie & Nick’s Wedding at Ashdown Park

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Lucky Maddie and Nick had just a perfect winter wedding yesterday at Ashdown Park. ashdown-park02The snow made the hotel into a winter wonderland and the light was simply gorgeous. Amy and I loved Maddie’s dress from Leonie Claire and she was well prepared with a pair of moon boots so didn’t mind crunching through the snow for these exceptional portraits. They chose Pollen for their gorgeous flowers and had a stack of beautiful cupcakes from the Angel Food bakery in Brighton. and the day was very festive and fun. They gave their ushers and Best Man comedy Christmas jumpers as gifts ashdown-park01and we are looking forward to seeing their marryoke from Perfect Day Studios who did the video. www.devlinphotos.co.uk

Buxted Park Wedding Fair this Sunday

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

IMG_50300wAm busy getting ready for the wedding fair at Buxted Park this Sunday. It is such a gorgeous venue for a Sussex country wedding and as a wedding photographer, I love working there. It looks as if my new Queensberry studio album will arrive in time and I am having some new portfolio images printed as a taste of what is to come when the business is revamped for my 10 year anniversary next year. Exciting stuff! Clare is due to have her baby any day now and Amy is working elsewhere so I will be on my own at the wedding fair but I am looking forward to catching up with Donal from Pollen flowers.
