Christa and Ross had their wedding at the glorious venue of Buxted park in Sussex last Saturday and at last the sun decided to shine. Christa looked incredibly beautiful and was quite comfortable being photographed. She was also ready really early which meant we had time to think about her pre-wedding portraits and have some fun with her two girlfriends, Nicky and Emily. Christa put quite a lot of input into where the images were taken all day and I love being able to find something new in a venue that I have been to quite often. I love the portraits in the field of sheep as they are so rural but my favourites are by the brick wall which I have never used before as it is in the car park. This was a very elegant wedding but still lots of fun.

On Tuesday (I Know!) Amy and I headed to the glorious Buxted Park in Sussex for the wedding of Nicola and Daniel. Nicola owns Florian Flowers, so we knew this would be an inspirational wedding and as we discussed it on the way, I came up with the idea that we would treat it as if we had never shot at Buxted before. I wanted to see it fresh and discover some new bits and places to shoot. The suites are huge so even with lots of people coming and going, there was still space to do some detail shots and I loved her “I DO” shoes. The ceremony was one of the most emotional we have ever seen as there were quite a few tears from Daniel and his twin brother. Their film, shot by the lovely Jo at Padgham Productions is going to be outstanding.
There was some rain but I had brought our floral umbrellas and was keen to do lots of interior shots anyway. Recently, I have been obsessing about shooting into the light and I knew we could get some strong shots into the windows and doorways. Of course, the flowers were utterly gorgeous, girlie with a vintage edge and it was great to see the first peonies of the season. Everything had a laid back elegance to it, with a classic vintage wedding twist. Throughout the drinks, Adam Chandler sang songs from the Rat Pack and sounded amazing. As we left, the sun finally came out but I don’t think a little bit of rain bothered anyone at the wedding or affected how strong their photography is.

We found Sian getting ready for her wedding in the gorgeous Robert and Elizabeth Browning suite at Buxted Park. It has very dark oriental furnishing with a beautiful four poster bed and provided a dramatic background for photos. As it was just Sian and her Mum, everything was very calm so we actually had some time to play around with photographing the flowers, shoes and dress. Sian wasn’t too keen on how the hairdresser had done her hair so she completely redid it herself and did look beautiful and classic, almost 1940s glamour. As the sun was now setting, Amy went to the Orangery to do the still-lives and did a great job, including lots of pictures of the yummy looking little cakes that we later found out were from Waitrose.
After their ceremony in the Library, Nigel and Sian joined their guests for a drinks reception in the Orangery while Amy and I did a quick rethink about where we were going to do their portraits. It was dark outside and there was another wedding in the Ballroom and Coat of Arms room so we set our lights up at the top of the Grand Staircase and made use of the columns and chandeliers up there.

Am busy getting ready for the wedding fair at Buxted Park this Sunday. It is such a gorgeous venue for a Sussex country wedding and as a wedding photographer, I love working there. It looks as if my new Queensberry studio album will arrive in time and I am having some new portfolio images printed as a taste of what is to come when the business is revamped for my 10 year anniversary next year. Exciting stuff! Clare is due to have her baby any day now and Amy is working elsewhere so I will be on my own at the wedding fair but I am looking forward to catching up with Donal from Pollen flowers.

Yesterday we had a company outing to London to attend a seminar by Johannes Van Kan I am not normally one for getting involved in this kind of thing as the last one I went to started with the speaker asking what kind of car everyone drove. (mostly BMWs) They then went on to explain up-selling techniques to squeeze extra money from clients and upgrade that all important flash car. However I have seen Johannes’s work through Queensberry and love his images and philosophy.
2010 will be my ten year anniversary shooting weddings and I want to revamp the business to reflect how I work now and to stand out from the growing crowd of other photographers around. So I was seeking some inspiration yesterday and was not disappointed. He is an intelligent but kooky photographer who has great passion and energy. He is not afraid to put his heart and soul into his work and clearly packs some magic in his camera bag on a wedding day. I made furtive notes throughout the day, not exactly of what he said, but of the ideas that were germinating in my head. I now need to sit down and work out how to translate those and progress but am very excited about the coming year and about not being afraid to make some changes and be me. It was the first time I have met another photographer who gives clients a full set of prints and then the freedom to choose a Queensberry album if they can afford it. He then puts a lot of creativity into the design but like me, he doesn’t package everything. We also seem to have a similar taste in music and that is mostly cover versions. From some of the questions that were being asked, we got the impression that some of the other photographers there still wanted him to tell them how to up-sell or brag about how they do it but I came away feeling that I had met a kindred spirit. I didn’t speak to him or shake his hand but wish that I had said thank you. As for cars, we drive Skodas because Clare’s Dad runs the dealership and we got a great discount!

This is our latest Queensberry Duo album that Annabel & Martin have kindly agreed to let us use as a studio sample. I am very much hoping that it arrives in time for the wedding fair at Buxted Park next weekend as it should be beautiful.

The current issue of Wedding Flowers Magazine features Fiona and Arthur’s wedding that
we shot earlier in the year at Buxted Park. The editor loved the strong colour theme in the masses of sunflowers and purple fabrics. This was a relatively low key wedding and Fiona’s friend did the flowers but they really made the most of the setting and it looked beautiful. Very Inspiring! If you pick the magazine up check out the contributors page for a little profile of me, feel very lucky

Fiona and Arthur had a strong colour theme of purple and yellow which carried from the bride’s purple dress from Alfred Angelo through to the beautiful sunflowers that featured everywhere. The florist was a friend of Fiona’s and she did a great job of bringing the hotel to life. The corridor to the orangery was lined with pots of lavender and all the chairs had a sunflower tied on the back. The ceremony was held in the library, the drinks were on the lawn and the meal was in the orangery, all great for wedding photos. As it was a Thursday, Buxted was quiet and it felt exclusive. The couple own the Patisserie Valentin in Heathfield so Arthur had made the wedding cake, which I imagine tasted divine.
We took most of the portraits in the herb garden, which is a less obvious location than the house and went well with their theme of lavender. It was a very relaxed day and just felt so lovely to have some sunshine!

This week I have been working with the boys at Pollen to produce a book for weddings at Buxted Park, showing how the different rooms look when set up. So I have been going up to weddings there this week to photograph the tables and the rooms. It is incredible to see the difference in how couples set their themes and how important those finishing touches can be. The chair covers really lift the place and add a lot of light into the room. They can also be personalised with sashes in your colour theme, with labels for guests names or flowers such as Clare’s little herb posies on the back of her chairs in September. Pollen have expanded their hire business to include vintage candelabras, birdcages, even floral jugs and teapots! Dex is so full of ideas and enthusiasm that it is quite inspiring.
The book should be complete in the next couple of weeks and will be shown to couples thinking of getting married at Buxted Park. They had an evening this week just for last minute bookings so that seems to be a big trend this year. Click on the link below to see the current version of the book, especially if you are thinking of getting married at Buxted this year. If you cannot open the book, try downloading www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

Lisa and Peter were the second couple that I met who had changed their plans for a tropical beach wedding and opted for the winter chic surroundings of Buxted Park in Sussex. Clare started coverage at the couple’s house nearby where the groom was getting ready with the groomsmen before they drove to the hotel in a Land Rover decorated with ribbons. During our pre wedding meeting, it became clear that some outside shots were important to Lisa despite the late ceremony so she made sure that she and the flowergirls were all ready in plenty of time to go out for some posed shots. We had to lock the groom in the bar to make sure that he didn’t catch sight of the bride but I think he was not complaining. The late afternoon light was gorgeous and we got some beautiful shots of Lisa making use of the steps to show off the train on her dress.
The theme was black and white so Lisa added a little black shrug to complete her outfit and the Orangery looked very dramatic, especially as it was dark outside. For some of the wedding photography, we set up some lights in the Coat of Arms room so we could take some portraits using the columns which looked very classic and elegant. Our coverage finished with some shots of Peter and Lisa cutting their white chocolate cake from Choccywoccydoodah in Brighton.

As we are coming to the end of 2008, it is time to look back on a very busy year. This was my 18th year of being a photographer and the 8th that I have been a wedding photographer in Sussex. This was one of my busiest years and I am very glad to have Clare as second photographer and now our two newbies, Susanna and Julie. We all had a lot of fun (and a fair few cocktails!) this week at The Ginger Pig in Hove for our Christmas do. We are looking forward to doing a two day shoot for the Gingerman restaurants and January which will include shooting the food, yummy!
This is our busiest winter for weddings and I am thinking that couples are getting a lot better value at this time of year, although it can be a challenge with the weather and the lack of light. We have still got one more wedding to do at the Pavilion before Christmas and have just taken a booking for a civil partnership on the 30th. We will then be shooting more weddings in January than we have ever done and in February we will be at wedding fairs in Buxted Park and The Royal pavilion.
