The Ginger group of restaurants in Sussex have just opened a new pub/ restaurant called The Ginger Dog in Brighton’s Kemptown. Pamela has designed the interior in their signature style of quirky laid-back elegance – The bowler hat lights above the bar will be quite a talking point! They manage to employ only the very lovliest people so the atmosphere is warm but of course the food is what makes them so popular. Ben produced some of the dishes on offer for the food photography and they all look sensational. After the shoot was over, we got to sample everything (its such a hard job!) and it was all very yummy but the star dish for me is probably the chocolate and raspberry trifle, although the parfait was also out of this world. It is always a pleasure to work with the McKellars as they are incredibly passionate about the business and it is very infectious. Its a great venue for a romantic meal, a family outing or party in the fabulous Private Dining Room on the first floor. All four of their venues can also host a wedding reception including their biggest, The Ginger Pig in Hove.

The very lovely Matt & Andy from The Twenty One in Brighton’s Kemptown got in touch recently to have their gorgeous Boutique Hotel photographed. They needed some new images to refresh their website but have been so booked up, it has taken over a year to find a day when enough rooms were empty. The boys are very relaxed and welcoming which obviously makes them great hosts as they have a lot of loyal clients. For me, it is great to shoot some interior photography after the challenges of wedding and portrait photography. If you need to find some chic rooms for guests in Brighton, have a look at their site The Twenty One.

We were thrilled to be photographing the opening of the new H&M flagship store in Brighton’s Western Road. On Wednesday, Clare and I started by photographing the empty shop, which is enormous and houses their entire range in children, men’s and womenswear. The space has been designed beautifully and has lots of visual interest and quirkiness. We took some shots of their very funky staff and then it was time for the party to begin. Due South did a magnificent job of catering the event with unique canapés and locally inspired cocktails. Local indie band The Maccabees did a DJ set and over 1000 invited guests took advantage of 20% off shopping. Before we left, we put the cameras away and indulged in a spot of shopping. Sometimes this job is such a strain! The official opening was today at midday and there was a very long queue all hoping to get a goody bag and voucher worth up to £100. I met a lovely group of girls who has £270 worth between them, that they were sharing and having a lot of fun spending. It is great to have a retail outlet in town with a slick, spacious interior with reasonably priced clothes that are not piled up like a jumble sale. It is definitely my new favourite shop.

Have spent today at the lovely Studio Nine in Hove photographing furniture for Steve Baines-Holmes. He has been designing and making unique pieces using oak and formica which are retro but functional. Steve is also a great carpenter and has done some work on our house and I still have a few projects in mind for him! He can be contacted on 07771751370 or steve.baines71@ntlworld.com
Product photography can look like the simplest most straight forward thing to do but it has its own challenges. However it is great to get into the studio sometimes and have complete control over the lighting. As ever we were looked after by the amazing photographer James Pike who hires out his well equipped studio www.studioninebrighton.co.uk

I love doing food photography. It is a very different challenge to taking portraits, the subject doesn’t move or have an attitude but colour balance and composition are very important to make the image interesting and the food appetising. So on a bitterly cold January day, I came up with the bright idea of shooting all the new food photography for the Gingerman Restaurants out in the garden of the Ginger Fox in Albourne. They serve a lot of the food on slate so I found a battered old crate that looked great as a contrast in texture. Using low depth of field and the winter sunlight, I produced a set of images that are rustic but sophisticated … just like the pub. The food looked delicious but went cold very quickly which was handy when it came to the ice-cream. A couple of days later I went back to take some moody winter shots of the outside in the frost. I brought the family so that we could take advantage of their new £10 two course special and the great children’s menu. For details on booking a table, even at the Ginger Pig in Hove now, have a look at their web site.
